Viva questions answers
Part 2
11.What is piezometer?
Piezometer is a pressure measurement device. It is the simple manometer it’s one end open to atmosphere and another end is connected where pressure is to measure.
12.What is vapour pressure?
The pressure exerted by the saturated vapour in the close container on the liquid surface at given temperature is known as saturated vapour pressure. Vapour pressure of water at 20*c pv=2.5kpa and at 100’c pv=100kpa =1atm.
13. What is cavitation?
In the fluid if the absolute pressure of fluid becomes less than vapor pressure at the corresponding temperature the bubbles are formed and if these bubbles carry in a region of high pressure the bubbles get collapse the pitting, cavitation phenomenon takes place it erodes the surface. Example-at suction side of the pump
14. What is a barometer?
It is an instrument that measures local atmospheric pressure. Mercury is used in a barometer because of its high density and low vapor pressure.
15. What is buoyancy force?
When a body is immersed partially or completely in a fluid the net vertical upward hydrostatic force exerted by the fluid on the body is known as buoyant force and it will the weight of the fluid displaced. Its point of application is the center of gravity of displaced fluid known as the center of buoyancy.
16. What is Archimedes principle?
When a body is submerged in fluid in equilibrium the net vertical hydrostatic force (buoyant force) becomes equal to the weight of the body. The body is said to in floating. It is known as the Archimedes principle.
17. What is the metacenter?
Metacentre is the point of intersection of the new line of action of buoyant force and centroidal axis. Metacentre may lie inside or outside the body. C.G and centre of buoyancy always lie inside the body.
18. What is metacentric height?
The distance between the metacenter and center and of gravity is known as metacentric height.
19. What are the different positions of metacenter for a partially submerged body?
20. What is rolling and pitching?
Rolling-When the ships oscillate about the longitudinal axis with a certain time period is known as rolling.
Pitching-When the ships oscillate about the lateral axis, known as pitching.
