Fluid mechanics viva questions

1. What is viscosity?

The property of the fluid which offers internal resistance between two adjacent layers is known as viscosity. Viscosity is due to cohesive forces in liquid and also molecular momentum transfer in a perpendicular direction between two adjacent layers. These are of two types: 1. Dynamic viscosity 2. kinematic viscosity

2. what happens to viscosity when the temperature increases?

As the temperature increases the viscosity of liquid decreases due to decrease in cohesive forces between molecules. But in gasses viscosity increases due to increases in the randomness of the molecule.

3. What is newton’s law of viscosity?

As per newton’s law of viscosity shear stress between two layers a distance y from the surface is directly proportional to the rate of shear strain.

4. what are Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids?

Newtonian fluid-Those fluids follow Newton's law of viscosity known as Newtonian fluids. ex-water, air, oil, kerosene, etc.

Non-newtonian fluid– Those fluids which do not follow Newton’s law of viscosity. ex-toothpaste, lipstick, butter solution, honey solution.

5. what is the bulk modulus?

Bulk modulus is the measure of resistance to compression. Liquids have large bulk modulus w.r.t gasses.

6. What is surface tension?

It is defined as surface energy per unit area. Surface tension is due to unbalancing cohesive forces, it is a liquid phenomenon. It is also defined as force per unit length.

7. what is pascals law?

when the fluid is at rest, the applied pressure at a point distributes equal in every direction.

8. What is the hydrostatic paradox?

when a container is filled with fluid and the pressure force on the bottom portion is not equal to the weight of the liquid due to the non-uniform shape of the container is known as the hydrostatic paradox.

9. what is atmospheric pressure?

The pressure exerted by the environmental mass on the earth’s surface is known as atmospheric pressure. Atmospheric pressure is 101.325kpa.

10. what is gauge pressure?

Pressure measured with respect to the atmospheric pressure is known as gauge pressure. It can be +ve,-ve, and zero. Negative gauge pressure is known as Vaccum pressure.
